It would be very difficult to find any other volume on ceramic repair and restoration that contained such a wealth of information in regard to methods and materials as is to be found in the very concise book prepared by Mary Rose. As lesson follows lesson, it is obvious that we are being guided by a dedicated teacher.
We see how our understanding of methods is enhanced and we are able to undertake more and more difficult work so that both the trained and the beginner will benefit by most carefully studying this book. 'Careful' is indeed the word, as not only are we encouraged to exercise care with our ceramics but we see that great care to note the exact detail in all that we do is impressed upon us.
As we progress through the detailed instructions we cannot fail to be impressed by the wealth of new materials available.
Mary makes the modern method clear with exact detailed instructions.
Not only are we guided in repair, replacement and repainting but also modelling and moulding are clearly explained. The restoration of gilding and the use of gold leaf are included.
Mary has particular skill and experience in the restoration of Oriental Ceramics and their repair with gold inlay as shown in the Raj Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1992. The restoration of miscellaneous fabrics and materials completes a book which will prove to be of great value to both the beginner and the experienced craftsman.
I cannot recall any other volume which would tell me the cost of setting up a studio, operating costs and such detail of materials as is to be found in this book.
It should find a place in the library of anybody interested in ceramics and their preservation.
